Onyx joins Zoom to provide the context layer for “Conversation to Completion”

By Chris Weaver and Yuhong Sun

A Letter to our Customers

Today we’re announcing that Onyx is joining Zoom. We want to start with what matters most: nothing about how you use Onyx is changing. Same product, same team, same service. What follows is why we made this decision and what it opens up.

What this means for you

  • Same product

    Onyx remains a standalone, open-source, app-agnostic product.

  • Same team

The Onyx team, including customer success and forward deployed engineers, keeps working with you.

  • Same data access

If you self-host, nothing changes for your data. If we manage your deployment, no one at Zoom outside the Onyx team has access to your data.

  • Same subscription

Renewals and expansions go through the same channels, and there’s nothing you need to do.

Read the FAQ

When ChatGPT arrived, it was clear that large language models would change how work gets done. It was just as clear what they were missing. A model could tell you almost anything about the world, but nothing about your customers, your processes, the hard-won context that makes your team effective. It was a brilliant new hire, stuck on day one.

We started Onyx to close that gap.

Three years in, Onyx serves hundreds of thousands of people across hundreds of enterprises around the world. Some of those deployments run under extremely strict security requirements. Some operate at enormous scale. Some are heavily customized (made possible by OSS). Together, Onyx users send more than a million queries a week.

We got here because of you, our users and customers. Thank you for choosing Onyx, for pushing the product to new heights of polish and scale, and for inspiring us with visions of the future.

Joining Zoom lets us bring Onyx to an even wider audience. So much of an organization’s context lives in its meetings, calls, and chats, and we’re excited to make that context available in Onyx. We’re also excited to be providing this context to Zoom so that decisions can be actioned on by AI rather than sitting in transcripts. Our commitment hasn’t changed, though. Onyx remains app-agnostic, an unbiased connector for your organization’s knowledge wherever it lives. Zoom becomes one more source of context, not the only one. What’s new is what’s behind us: more resources to build faster and support you even better.

It remains our biggest honor to partner with you and to be trusted with your organization’s knowledge. We can’t wait to show you what’s next.

Frequently Asked Questions

If your question isn’t answered here, your Onyx team is happy to help.

  1. How does this impact the Onyx roadmap?

Zoom is dedicated to growing the Onyx user and customer base and so the top priority is making sure the product is aligned with user needs. The roadmap is not affected in any significant way outside of some integrations with Zoom as a knowledge source.

  2. Do I need to take any action as a result of this announcement?

No. There are no actions needed on your end. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out.

  3. Is Onyx still open-source?

    Yes, Onyx will remain open-source.

  4. Does Zoom now have access to my data?

If you are running Onyx in a self-hosted manner, then nothing changes for your data.

If the Onyx team is managing your deployment, we will continue to manage it for you and no additional Zoom employees (outside of Onyx) have any access to your data.

  5. Why is Zoom investing in a context layer / enterprise search?

Zoom is taking “Conversation to Completion”. This means not only being a meetings product where decisions are made, but also leveraging AI to make those decisions a reality. The context layer is what makes this possible so that agents can have the full context before committing to getting something done.

  6. What is the long term plan for Onyx by Zoom?

Onyx will remain a standalone product, with Zoom’s full support. It doesn’t depend on any other part of Zoom.

Work has already started on a Zoom connector, so your meetings, calls, and chats can be searched in Onyx alongside everything else.

Later, you’ll be able to connect Onyx to Zoom’s AI products so they can use the same context. This will only happen if you choose to turn it on.

  7. What happens to my subscription?

Your subscription remains the same. Renewals and expansions will go through the same channels as before.

Onyx will continue to be offered as a standalone product, and it will still be the Onyx customer success and forward deployed teams working with you to ensure the best possible experience.
